Two things to know about my Uncle Emile is that he’s an artist, and he suggested my parents name me Claude. I spent my childhood trying to live with this unusual name for a girl, but as an adult it fits me well. The fact that Uncle Emile was an artist encouraged me and fed my creative imagination. In recent years, we have connected as artists, and it was after a visit to his gorgeous home and studio that I began working on “Migration.’ There are certain shapes and energies in the work that remind me of his language. I don’t know if it’s something of our family’s experience of exile from Iraq. Or maybe it’s my childhood memories of his paintings coming though. All I know is they’re connected.
